Sometimes you need a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Maybe you want to move away from big city living or perhaps you simply want to see what interesting small towns are out there and learn more about their fascinating histories, dine at hole-in-the-wall restaurants, take a leisurely stroll to see the natural splendor or have some fun at unique attractions. Fortunately, there are plenty such hidden gems found around the country that are worth visiting on a day trip or weekend getaway.
HGTV searched around the country for "charming" hamlets and villages to compile a list of the "best kept secret" of the best small town in every state. According to the site, the top choice for Missouri is Hannibal.
Here's what HGTV had to say about this quaint spot:
"Hannibal, Missouri, celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2019. Author Samuel Clemons, better know by his pen name, Mark Twain, lived in his Mississippi River town as a boy. In his honor, it offers a variety of shops, museums, riverboat rides and other experiences, many based on his characters. A week-long Tom Sawyer Days Festival is held each year. A new Big River Steampunk Festival has been drawing visitors, too, many of whom dress in Victorian-era costumes."
