America's Oldest WWII Veteran Gets Much-Needed Upgrades to His House

INJORichard Overton, America's oldest World War II veteran, got some much-needed upgrades and repairs to the house that he's been living in since 1948.

The Austin American-Statesman reports that Overton, who is now 111 years old, is staying at a hotel as people from the Meals on Wheels Central Texas’s Home Repair Program work on his house. The repairs to his home are estimated to be around $35,000.

Workers have had to replace the home's original wiring, install central air and heating, replace carpeting, and widen doorways. The work will be completed in about two weeks.

The repairs are part of an effort to keep Overton in the home he built. There is a GoFundMe campaign setup for him in order to pay for 24-hour in-home care so that he doesn't have to move to a nursing home. At publication time, it was just $5,000 shy of reaching its $200,000 goal.

Overton has become somewhat of a celebrity from being the oldest WWII veteran and what he credits his long life to. His secret? He smokes cigars daily along with having a little bit whiskey in the morning and at night.
